Yona means Bear in Cherokee. The area in and around Fort Mountain was home to the Native American Cherokee for hundreds of years, and their legacy is still felt throughout North Georgia today. Black bears make their home in the North Georgia mountains, they can also be found along the Ocmulgee River drainage system in the central part of the state and in the Okefenokee Swamp in the southeast.
